NEW LIFE Climate School Day at FSB 2023
The major NEW LIFE Climate School Day, to which garden and landscape building pupils, teachers and trainees from throughout Germany were invited, took place at the FSB on Wednesday, 26 October 2023.
At 10:00 a.m., we invited all pupils, teachers, trainers and trainees (as well as, of course, all other interested parties) to a climate protection forum in the Congress Centre East of Koelnmesse.
The panel event (free admission) began with the presentation of the NEW LIFE initiative and the pioneering learning portal 'NEW LIFE macht Schule'. Following this, Prof. Peter Wiesen from the Institute for Atmospheric and Environmental Research of the University of Wuppertal reported on the importance of climate protection for the garden and landscape building and the future of our planet. A panel of representatives from NEW LIFE, schools, climate protection associations and Koelnmesse has then discussed the possibilities for contributing to climate protection in school, training, career and leisure time.
Sustainably climate-fit for the future
The NEW LIFE initiative is dedicated to a sustainable circular economy and the ecologically responsible use of old tyres for climate-friendly recycling products for public space, sports and exercise. The spectrum ranges from elastic fall-protection surfaces for playgrounds through high-performance tracks for sports grounds and fitness centres to weatherproof protective layers for artificial turf and rooftop greening.
Every ton of old tyres that is recycled (and not burned) in an ecologically responsible way saves approximately 700 kilograms of CO2 emissions. With the material recycling of 220,000 tons of old tyres, waste products with a half life of 2,000 years are avoided, natural resources are preserved and around 154,000 tons of CO2 emissions are saved annually – that is approximately the annual CO2 emissions of a small city of 15,000 inhabitants. High quality recycling products of tyre rubber granulate are robust, durable, extremely weather-resistant, easy to process and low maintenance. Form, thickness and colour can be individually adapted to customer wishes, which opens up new possibilities for the design of playgrounds, green spaces, sports grounds, etc.
At the NEW LIFE trade fair stand (Hall 10.2, D084) at FSB 2023, visitors could look forward to a 17-metre-long NEW LIFE experience test track. Here you could experience the most varied floor coverings of sustainable rubber granulate step by step and up close.
'NEW LIFE macht Schule': the learning portal for garden and landscape building
In order to already sensitise coming generations in school and training to the importance of environmental and climate protection, sustainability and recycling (products), NEW LIFE has set up a free learning portal for garden and landscape building schools and training institutions.
The climate protection project will be presented at the NEW LIFE trade fair stand. Visitors of all generations can try out the varied content of the lessons at an information terminal.
The teaching offering encompasses eight lessons with diverse content that can be flexibly integrated into classes and training. Explanatory videos are as much part of the offering as group work, learning games and quiz questions on climate protection, etc. The thematic spectrum ranges from environmental protection through circular economy and raw materials to the ecological advantages of and possible uses for sustainable recycling products made of tyre rubber granulate in garden, landscape and sports grounds construction.
